SF50 Type Rating: What to Expect

Earning your Cirrus Vision Jet (SF50) type rating is one of the most rewarding milestones in an aviation career. It is also one of the most demanding. Proper preparation before arriving at the Vision Center can make the difference between simply completing the course and truly enjoying the experience.

Before You Can Begin

To receive an SF50 training slot at the Cirrus Vision Center in Knoxville, Tennessee, you must be associated with a specific Vision Jet as an owner, professional pilot, or approved lessee.

Unless your training is included as an entitlement with the purchase of a new Vision Jet, the current tuition is approximately $31,000 (subject to change).

Plan on dedicating nearly two consecutive weeks to complete the course.

Why Is the Type Rating So Challenging?

The SF50 type-rating course is conducted under a 14 CFR Part 142 training certificate and is taught to Airline Transport Pilot (ATP) standards.

This is a performance-based program—not simply an academic exercise.

You’ll be expected to demonstrate proficiency in:

• Aircraft systems
• Normal and emergency procedures
• Memory items
• Aircraft limitations
• Automation management
• Instrument procedures
• Crew Resource Management
• Sound aeronautical decision-making

The pace is fast, and new information is presented every day.

Flying a turbine aircraft introduces new demands. You’ll operate at higher speeds, higher altitudes, and within a faster-paced ATC environment than most piston pilots have experienced.

Jet Readiness Training

One of the best investments you can make is preparing before arriving in Knoxville.

Our Jet Readiness Training familiarizes you with the Vision Jet’s systems, avionics, operating philosophy, and cockpit procedures before your official training begins.

We recommend dedicating 30 to 60 days before your training slot to focused preparation.

Every pilot arrives with a different level of experience, but nearly everyone benefits from additional preparation.

Our instructors help you:

• Understand aircraft systems
• Learn cockpit flows
• Master avionics fundamentals
• Develop confidence
• Identify areas needing additional study
• Verify you’re ready before training begins

The goal isn’t simply passing your checkride.

What Should You Study?

Cirrus provides an excellent collection of training materials before your arrival, including:

• Aircraft manuals
• Systems guides
• Video instruction
• Online learning resources

The videos provide an outstanding overview of the aircraft, but classroom instruction goes much deeper.

Ground school moves quickly, and instructors assume you’ve completed the assigned pre-study.

Pilots who arrive well prepared generally find the simulator sessions much more enjoyable and significantly less stressful.

Success depends on three things:

• Memorization

After the Type Rating

For most owner-pilots, earning the type rating isn’t the final step.

Your temporary airman certificate will typically include a Pilot-in-Command (PIC) limitation, requiring completion of Supervised Operating Experience (SOE) before acting as PIC.

We’d be honored to complete your SOE with you.

As experienced Vision Jet mentor pilots, we are familiar with the FAA process for removing your PIC limitation and can guide you through every step.

It’s often the moment when everything finally comes together.

Do I Have to Complete My Type Rating at Cirrus?

While several third-party training providers offer in-aircraft SF50 type ratings, many insurance carriers require simulator-based initial training conducted in a full-motion, FAA-qualified Flight Training Device.

Cirrus Aircraft’s training provides access to emergency scenarios, aircraft system failures, adverse weather situations, and abnormal procedures that simply cannot be practiced safely in the aircraft itself.

For that reason, simulator-based training offers a more comprehensive learning environment and better prepares pilots for real-world operations.
