Supervised Operating Experience (SOE) and Mentor Pilot Selection

Congratulations! You’ve successfully completed your Cirrus Vision Jet type rating and earned your SF50 type certificate. That’s a significant accomplishment—but it’s only the beginning of your journey as a Vision Jet Pilot in Command.

What Happens After You Earn Your Type Rating?

Most pilots completing their initial SF50 type rating receive a temporary airman certificate with an SF50 type rating that includes a Pilot-in-Command (PIC) limitation.

So, what does that mean?

Before acting as Pilot in Command of a Vision Jet, you must complete Supervised Operating Experience (SOE) with a qualified mentor pilot. Once you’ve successfully completed the required training and demonstrated proficiency, the PIC limitation can be removed from your airman certificate.

What Is Supervised Operating Experience?

Supervised Operating Experience, commonly referred to as SOE, is designed to bridge the gap between simulator training and real-world aircraft operations.

While simulator training teaches aircraft systems and emergency procedures, SOE allows you to apply those skills in actual day-to-day flying under the guidance of an experienced Vision Jet mentor pilot.

Cirrus requires a minimum of 25 hours of supervised flight time, although additional mentoring may be beneficial depending on your experience, proficiency, and intended mission profile.

The goal isn’t simply to accumulate hours—it’s to build the knowledge, judgment, and confidence needed to safely operate the Vision Jet as Pilot in Command.

The SF50 Flight Support Difference

At SF50 Flight Support, we believe SOE should prepare you for far more than meeting a regulatory requirement.

Our structured mentoring program is built around three essential pillars:

Aircraft Proficiency

Develop confidence and competence during every phase of flight, including normal operations, abnormal situations, weather decision-making, automation management, airport operations, and cross-country flying.

Vision Jet Ownership

Learn the practical aspects of ownership that aren’t covered during type rating, including maintenance planning, JetStream, service centers, operational planning, aircraft care, and best practices developed through real-world ownership experience.

Professional Jet Operations

Gain practical knowledge of operating in the business aviation environment, including passenger management, FBO procedures, flight planning, risk management, crew resource management, and techniques that make every flight safer and more efficient.

Choosing the Right Mentor Pilot

Your mentor pilot will have a significant influence on your development as a Vision Jet pilot.

Choose someone who not only satisfies Cirrus and insurance requirements, but who also enjoys teaching, communicates effectively, and has extensive real-world Vision Jet operating experience.

The right mentor will help you build confidence, answer questions, share practical ownership knowledge, and prepare you for the situations you’ll encounter long after your SOE is complete.

Ready to Begin?

Whether you’ve just completed your type rating or are preparing for aircraft delivery, SF50 Flight Support can help you complete your SOE efficiently while building the skills and confidence needed to operate your Vision Jet safely.

Is SOE training?

While coaching and guidance can occur during SOE, the goal is to make the pilot competent in all phases of flight, preflight planning, and aeronautical decision making (ADM). This is why the FAA permits SOE to be conducted with qualified mentor pilots. Of course, the more qualified the mentor pilot, the better the guidance and evaluation you receive. Nonetheless, the mentor pilot does not need to be an instructor.
In addition, experienced mentor pilots know how to create flight scenarios that will leave you with great experiences and prepared for single pilot operations.

Our personalized approach…

We think our approach makes SOE enjoyable, challenging, structured and effective!  Our mentor pilots provide guidance and best-practices along the way.
We also know how to optimize your SOE experience by being flexible.  We incorporated sightseeing, business meetings and family activities during previous SEO’s, while still completing the objectives of the program.  Our SOE’s are fun, efficient, effective, memorable and challenging…
