Two Ways to Calculate Operating Cost
There are two common methods used to determine the hourly cost of operating a Vision Jet.
Method 1 – Direct Operating Cost
This method considers only the costs directly associated with flying the aircraft:
- Fuel
- JetStream annual base fee (allocated over expected annual flight hours)
- JetStream prepaid hourly maintenance charges
For a typical three-year-old Vision Jet enrolled in a 12-month/150-hour JetStream contract, the costs are approximately:
- JetStream Annual Base Fee: $56,000 ($373 per flight hour when spread over 150 hours)
- JetStream Hourly Charge: Approximately $420 per flight hour (varies by aircraft age and contract)
- Fuel: Approximately $385 per flight hour (based on average U.S. fuel prices)
Estimated Direct Operating Cost: Approximately $1,178 per flight hour.
This calculation is useful when determining the approximate cost of operating the aircraft for a trip or comparing travel alternatives.
Method 2 – Total Cost of Ownership
A more comprehensive approach is to calculate all anticipated annual ownership expenses and divide that total by the number of hours you expect to fly during the year.
Typical expenses include:
- JetStream program
- Fuel
- Hangar rent
- Insurance
- Database and communication services not included in JetStream
- Financing costs (if applicable)
- Registration fees and taxes
- Pilot salaries or contract pilot expenses (if applicable)
- Cleaning, detailing, and miscellaneous operating expenses
This method provides a more realistic picture of what each flight hour actually costs over the course of a year.
The primary limitation is that the calculation depends heavily on annual aircraft utilization. Many ownership expenses are fixed regardless of how much the aircraft flies. As annual flight hours increase, those fixed costs are spread over more hours, reducing the effective hourly cost.
Which Method Is Better?
Both methods are valuable because they answer different questions.
Direct Operating Cost helps determine the approximate cost of flying one additional trip.
Total Cost of Ownership helps owners budget for an entire year and understand the true financial commitment of aircraft ownership.
